Relationship and Sex Education

At Westlands, we are committed to providing a nurturing and holistic education that supports the social, emotional, and mental health of our students. Our Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum plays an integral role in realising this commitment.

Our intent is to deliver an RSE curriculum that is tailored to the unique needs and challenges of our SEMH students, empowering them with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to navigate the complex terrain of relationships, sexuality, and personal well-being.

1. Promoting Well-Being: Our RSE curriculum prioritises the mental and emotional well-being of our students. We aim to create a safe and inclusive space where students can explore their feelings, emotions, and relationships, fostering a sense of self-acceptance and resilience.

2. Building Healthy Relationships: We believe that healthy relationships are fundamental to the well-being of our students. Our RSE curriculum focuses on developing essential social and emotional skills, including communication, empathy, and consent, to enable our students to form positive and respectful relationships.

3. Inclusive Education: We are dedicated to providing inclusive RSE education that recognises and respects the diverse identities and backgrounds of our students. Our curriculum promotes understanding, tolerance, and acceptance of different gender identities, sexual orientations, and cultural perspectives.

4. Age-Appropriate Content: We ensure that the content of our RSE curriculum is age-appropriate and sensitive to the individual needs of our students, taking into account their developmental stages and emotional readiness.

5. Parental Engagement: We actively involve parents and caregivers in the RSE education process, fostering open communication and collaboration between home and school to ensure that our students receive consistent and supportive guidance.

6. Safeguarding: The safety of our students is paramount. Our RSE curriculum equips students with the knowledge to recognise potential risks, make informed decisions, and seek help when needed, reinforcing our commitment to safeguarding.

7. Empowering Choices: We empower our students to make informed choices about their relationships and personal well-being, respecting their autonomy and values while providing them with the tools to navigate the challenges they may encounter.

Our RSE curriculum at Westlands is not just about imparting knowledge; it's about nurturing the social and emotional growth of our SEMH students. We aim to prepare them for a future where they can engage in healthy, respectful relationships and make informed choices that lead to fulfilling and meaningful lives. Through open dialogue, empathy, and comprehensive education, we support our students in their journey toward self-discovery and personal empowerment.
